I finally read my first Brad Meltzer novel, The Escape Artist, and this novel does not disappoint! This was unlike any thriller novel I have read, and it took a thrilling twist to this already established genre, and made it a delight to devour. I like what I have read so far by Meltzer, and I’m looking forward to reading more!

In The Escape Artist Jim “Zig” Zigarowski works in a very special part of the Dover Air Force base: the mortuary serving our fallen service members. When a plane crashes at a rural base in Alaska, the bodies are brought to Dover, but Zig recognizes one name in particular: Sargent Nola Brown. Zig is ripped back in time to when Nola saved his daughter, and Zig takes a personal interest to see this body taken care of properly. However, after a cursory inspection, this is not Nola’s body. Nola is alive and someone wants her dead.

Zig makes it his business to help Nola, yet in the process he finds out there is so much about Nola Brown that he knows nothing about. As Zig digs deeper down this rabbit hole, strategic sleight of hands and power plays abound throughout the chain of command at Dover and beyond. Can Zig help Nola before the people who truly want her dead make it happen?

This was definitely one of the more chilling thrillers I have read in a long time. With Zig as a mortician, it added a creepy feel to the story line, and a unique twist to our protagonist that I had never seen before. Nola was another chilling character that added great depth to the story. As the story progressed, we got glimpses of Nola’s past, and it was downright heartbreaking. These flashbacks added grit to the story, and created one heck of an ending!
