Wow—this one really pulled me in! Shadows of the Fathers has so many of the things I look for in a good thriller: espionage, cartel violence, international intrigue, family secrets, extremely complicated characters, and enough twists to keep me turning the pages. I especially liked Hunter Long. He isn't the stereotypical super-spy who has everything figured out from page one. He's a CIA analyst dealing with the loss of his parents, the guilt surrounding a past killing, and the intimidating legacy of his grandfather, a legendary CIA operative. Watching Hunter struggle with his past while being pushed into situations far outside his comfort zone made him a character I genuinely wanted to root for.
The plot starts with a horrific cartel murder in Mexico, but things escalate quickly. What initially looks like a cartel investigation turns into something much bigger, involving Russian and Chinese interests, political extremism, digital networks, and the mysterious Initiative. I loved how the story kept peeling back another layer and making me realize that there was more going on than I initially thought. The action moves between Mexico and Colombia, and the stakes keep getting higher with every turn of the page. There were definitely moments when I thought I knew where things were headed—only to have the story take another turn.
The supporting characters add a lot to the story, too. Bianca Cruz really caught my attention because she's trying to find a way to navigate the violent world she's been born into. Santé is fascinating because his supposed loyalty and protectiveness exist right alongside a willingness to do some very dark things. And Victor Chernov, the Russian spymaster, brings another level of complexity because his loyalties aren't always easy to decipher. I also really enjoyed the way Hunter's family history becomes increasingly important to the larger mystery. The title Shadows of the Fathers ended up feeling especially fitting.
Bottom line: Shadows of the Fathers is an excellent read. It's an ambitious, fast-moving thriller with characters who aren't simply good or bad, and I really enjoyed that gray area. The combination of family drama and international espionage kept me hooked, and the ending left me wanting to know what happens to Hunter next. If you're a fan of spy thrillers, intense action, diverse plots, and/or characters trying to escape the shadows of their past, I'd definitely put Shadows of the Fathers on your TBR. Me?
