Is there anything better than cracking open the newest Jack Reacher novel? For me, it’s tough to beat, and Lee Child and Andrew Child deliver another satisfying fix with Chain Reaction. Reuniting Reacher with General Susan Turner, the story mixes murder, conspiracy, and personal stakes. When one of Turner’s investigators is killed during an assignment, she suspects a leak within her own command. She needs an outsider she can trust, and Reacher is the obvious choice. Their shared history adds an extra spark to an investigation where misplaced trust could prove fatal.
The trail takes Reacher to Colorado, where he establishes that the investigator was murdered—but the motive remains elusive. When Reacher becomes a target himself, the investigation points him toward California’s Silicon Valley. There, he and Turner pursue leads around Palo Alto involving a law firm and an artificial intelligence startup. What begins as an inquiry into one man’s death expands into a conspiracy involving stolen information, big money, and people willing to kill to protect their interests. Naturally, they make the mistake of standing between Reacher and the answers he wants.
Reacher’s renewed connection with Turner adds warmth amid the violence, giving the story a personal dimension that complements the action. For me, that balance is a big part of what makes this another superb entry in the series. Blending investigative suspense, hard-hitting confrontations, and a technological mystery, Chain Reaction delivers the toughness, intelligence, and underlying compassion that keep me coming back to Reacher. Closing the book left me with one familiar complaint: now I have to wait for the next one!
