I absolutely loved FIREFLY by JT Shull! Natasha Kildari is the kind of protagonist who belongs right alongside Mark Greaney’s legendary Gray Man—and one I would gladly follow into just about any dangerous situation. In FIREFLY, the second in the Natasha Kildai thriller series, Natasha is assigned a high-stakes mission: abduct a Russian scientist who has delivered hypersonic missile technology to North Korea. But when the scientist escapes after Natasha hands him over to the extraction team, the operation becomes considerably more complicated. With just ninety-six hours before a potentially catastrophic missile launch from North Korea, Natasha finds herself in a desperate race against time in a hostile country. What a terrific setup for an action-packed thriller!
The mission takes another dangerous turn as Natasha tracks down a North Korean scientist and a flash drive containing the missile's target package. However, the scientist has one condition for his cooperation: Natasha must reunite him with his wife and son, who defected to Seoul years earlier. Having lost her own family, Natasha makes the deeply personal decision to help him, even without Arselan's approval. I particularly enjoyed this aspect of the story because it reveals a compassionate side of Natasha that makes her much more than just another highly skilled operative. She's resourceful, determined, and fiercely loyal, even when her decisions put her in extraordinary danger.
What really made FIREFLY stand out for me was how frighteningly believable the entire premise felt. The prospect of Russian technology enabling a North Korean missile crisis is unsettling enough, but Shull develops the story with such authenticity that I repeatedly found myself thinking that, with only a few changes, this could almost read like nonfiction. Combine the realism of a looming threat of a devastating missile launch with nonstop action, excellent pacing, and a protagonist who can hold her own against the very best in the thriller genre, and Shull has delivered exactly the kind of novel I love to read. I cannot wait to see what he has in store for Natasha Kildari next.
If there is only one thriller you are going to read the rest of the year, I highly recommend you read FIREFLY!
