If you asked me which books I'm most looking forward to in 2027, Fire Fall by Brad Thor and Ward Larsen would definitely be at the top of the list. This international thriller wastes no time getting down to business. The novel opens with an irresistible blend of archaeology, World War II history, and modern intelligence operations. When two American archaeologists disappear on Indonesia's Halmahera Island, a post on a blog results in a classified U.S. alert that has remained dormant since 1945. What follows is a globe-spanning race involving a hidden Japanese installation, biological weapons, and a powerful organization pursuing ambitions that extend far beyond conventional geopolitics that could easily navigate its way into tomorrow’s headlines..
At the heart of the story are Dr. Sara Taylor, a US government bioweapons expert, and Alex Ross, a CIA with a non-official cover and contact throughout Southeast Asia that will serve as Dr. Taylor’s security. Their partnership is one of the novel's greatest strengths. As the danger escalates, their connection develops naturally, giving the story an emotional core that prevents it from becoming just another action thriller. As a result, every major twist and revelation carries real weight.
Readers will love how Fire Fall creates a relentless sense of momentum as the protagonists race to stop a weapon of mass destruction before it can threaten an unsuspecting public. The mystery surrounding the WWII facility serves as a powerful narrative engine, while contemporary threats transform a historical discovery into a potential global catastrophe. The story's connections to Imperial Japan's Unit 731, Nazi scientific programs, and long-buried wartime experiments provide a dark and fascinating historical foundation.
Ultimately, Fire Fall succeeds by blending the intrigue of a historical conspiracy thriller with the urgency of modern espionage. Thor and Larsen's second collaboration builds seamlessly on the synergy established in their superb thriller Cold Zero while introducing compelling new characters and a fresh, highly original plot. The result is a gripping, high-stakes adventure that's exceptionally difficult to put down.
Yes, Fire Fall will almost certainly be one of my favorite reads of 2027, and I suspect many thriller fans will feel the same way.
