Last Man Standing By Gregg Hurwitz

Explosive and intense with plenty of heart, Last Man Standing is a propulsive thriller that keeps you in suspense and fill you with equal amounts of dread and hope.  With this much-anticipated twelfth installment, Gregg Hurwitz raises the bar and once again proves why the Orphan X series stands among the very best in the thriller genre.

Evan Smoak gets a call from a young woman who needs help escaping captivity where she’s forced to scam innocent people out of their money for a nasty piece of work known as Boz.  But saving this woman is only the beginning of what becomes one of The Nowhere Man’s most difficult and taxing missions to date.  Putting everyone he has come to deeply care for in danger, a physically compromised Orphan X is forced to rely on his wits and intelligence to outmaneuver the threat that the Boz represents to the world.  And failure is not an option.

Last Man Standing is a brilliant edition to the incredible Orphan X series, taking a massive leap forward in the humanization of Evan Smoak.  He’s more vulnerable than ever, both emotionally and physically, which leads to him getting closer to those few people he has let into his world and results in relying on them for support like never before.  And with the necessity to rely almost solely on his intellect, it brings additional depth to a character that we know is physically formidable and operationally smart, but his genius goes to another level and it’s glorious to witness.

That’s not to say that Evan Smoak is weak and incapable of kicking serious ass.  On the contrary.  He still does his thing, taking the fight to the bad guys and rescuing those who need his help.  All while navigating friendships (and more) that still don’t come easy to him and result in some awkward yet funny and loving social moments.  Bringing levity and affection to a deadly serious mission that has more than its share of heartbreak.

It’s another brilliant Orphan X thriller knocked way out of the park by the masterful Gregg Hurwitz.  A tape measure shot that long-time fans will drool over and newcomers to the series will marvel at, wondering how they have lived this long without Evan Smoak in their lives.
