Cry Havoc is Jack Carr’s darkest thriller yet, and that’s saying something considering the gritty nature of all his books.
We know James Reece is a badass. But he kinda gets it from his dad and it’s about time we got some insights into the shadowy world that Tom Reece operated in. Set in the late 60’s, the intelligence community is in turmoil with a spy ship getting captured by North Korea, a high-level leak in the NSA exploited by the KGB, and a Soviet advisor seeking to make a mark on the world. Enter Tom Reece, a SEAL operator attached to the highly classified and shadowy MACV-SOG who finds himself embroiled in the eye of the storm.
Carr wrote Cry Havoc for students of history and combat. As an avid purveyor of both, I was struck by the charged nature of the narrative. From the high octane shootouts to the descriptive environments that take you back to the past, nothing feels amiss. It’s a dense odyssey of a man who tries to overcome the struggles to be extraordinary in the face of certain danger. From the haunting open combat sequence to the hollowed finale that mirrors reality all too greatly, the narrative booms ahead with lightning-fast velocity and leaves nothing to the imagination as Carr walks the readers through highly visualized action that shoots right out the pages.
Cry Havoc feels like a classic old school thriller, one of the OGs, with gritty action and paranoia-infused twists that are sure to blow your sleep away. Jack Carr doesn’t aim for anything less than a bullseye, and he doesn’t fail!
