Red Tide By M.P. Woodward

M.P. Woodward maps out the socio-economic state of the world in the not so distant future that feels realistically frightening in Red Tide.

Setting the stage for the next possible world war,  M.P Woodward engages in a simulation of how US and China will clash against each other to gain supremacy over the highly controlled semiconductors that would give either nation a major step-up in technology. In this scenario, China lays siege to the premium semiconductor facility in Taiwan with an intent to push the US out of the competition. With growing stakes that dictate the future of the civilized world, the US must launch all they have to ensure China doesn’t completely dominate the technological sector. Packed with naval and airborne combat sequences that are second to none in their sheer realism and visualization.

While the conflict is grand and complex, Woodward elegantly infuses a very human touch to the story in the form of varied and interesting characters, all with their own specialities, all linked together through the casualties of war and the ideals that bind us for the pursuit of harmony and unity. From a family of warriors taking the fight to China on the seas and in the air, to a tour guide team trapped right in the middle of the battleground, the story leapfrogs from one front to the next, never losing momentum and always driven by excitement and determination.

What stood out to me the most in Red Tide were the stellar combat sequences that felt like reading actual experiences from real pilots and naval officers who’ve been through the thick of it. My personal favorites were the aerial combat sequences that will make a Top-Gun fan salivate with the authenticity of each tactical engagement. It took me back to the grand depictions of Tom Clancy when he started off, going deep into the tactical and technical areas.

There’s something for everyone in Red Tide, whether it’s family drama, educational insights into semiconductors, or the grand scope of a world war-level engagement of two most powerful forces. It’s one of the most thought-provoking and cinematic experiences you’ll have with literature in recent thriller history.
