The Witch's Orchard By Archer Sullivan

The Witch’s Orchard is steeped in Appalachian folklore and small-town tradition in a way that feels both timeless and dead-on accurate. From whispered variations of the witch legend to small town life revolving around church activities and judging people by their last names, every detail rings true. The setting isn't just a backdrop—it's alive. You can almost taste the homemade desserts on the table, feel the tension of old family reputations, and, yes, crave the pepper chicken from the local Chinese restaurant (my personal favorite). The cultural nuance is rich and specific, making the story deeply immersive and undeniably atmospheric.

This is book one in the Annie Gore series, and I’m already counting down for the next. Annie is the kind of protagonist I love—tough, grounded, smart, and carrying just enough of a complicated past to keep things interesting. She’s not a superhero, but she’s resourceful and real, and her emotional depth adds a layer of authenticity to the investigation. Whether she’s facing small-town politics, buried secrets, or her own ghosts, Annie brings a quiet strength and compassion that’s easy to root for.

The pacing in The Witch’s Orchard is pitch perfect. The tension simmers early, then ramps up into a full-on race to the truth that never lets up. Each chapter propels the story forward with urgency but never sacrifices character or atmosphere. The mystery itself is one that needs to be uncovered in a town that needs answers and Annie Gore is determined to do so. If you like your mysteries with grit, folklore, and heart, this one delivers—and then some.

The Art Of A Lie By Laura Shepherd Robinson

Step inside 1749 London and you’ll find yourself elbow-deep in sugar, scandal, and schemes. Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s The Art of a Lie doesn’t just recreate the past—it wraps you in it, from the grime of the streets to the tension in the gambling halls and the shady characters behind those doors. The level of historical detail is extraordinary, from the confectionery craft to the way characters speak and carry themselves. I was completely transported—lost among the pages in a world I did not want to leave.

Told in four parts from two sharply drawn points of view, we follow Hannah Cole, a recently widowed confectioner trying to survive in a man’s world, and William Devereux, a mysterious “entrepreneur” with his own secrets and connections to Hannah’s late husband. Their narratives twist around each other, full of guarded truths, a list of lies and secrets each character wants to keep guarded and unspoken tension, until the arrival of a third force—former author turned magistrate Henry Fielding (yes that Henry Fielding author of The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, 1979) —ratchets up the stakes. What begins as a slow unraveling of a possible inheritance turns into a dangerous game of deception and survival.

This is more than a cat-and-mouse thriller—it’s a masterclass in manipulation, where trust is fleeting and everyone is vulnerable to being molded to someone else's purpose. Hannah and William are both prisoners of their past, haunted by the lies they’ve told and the truths they fear. As alliances shift and the pressure builds, the question becomes not just who will win, but who will survive the lies intact.

In Deadly Company By L. S. Stratton

In Deadly Company by L.S. Stratton is the kind of thriller that earns its place on your must-read list—not just for the mystery, but for the way it captures ambition, power, and the cost of staying silent. With its mix of corporate satire and psychological suspense, it delivers twists you won’t see coming, while also peeling back layers of what it means to survive in environments built to break you. Stratton’s background as a crime reporter shows in her razor-sharp details and her unflinching take on human behavior—this is storytelling with teeth.

What makes this book stand out is how it refuses to give you just one thing. It’s a murder mystery, yes, but also a character study and a social critique—cleverly told through dual (and very unique) timelines that make you question who to trust and what really happened that weekend. Nicole Underwood’s evolution from overburdened assistant to someone finally stepping into her own power is gripping and relatable. Her story reflects how easy it is to get lost in someone else’s shadow—and how powerful it is to step out of it.  The best part is that Nicole is a main character you will genuinely root for.

Stratton also has a knack for slipping humor into the tension. Lines like “a shark in the henhouse” and “the fairy godmother of bad decisions” cut through the darkness with bite and charm, reminding readers that survival sometimes comes with snark.  With perfectly timed twists, several ‘I did NOT see that coming!’ moments,  a dual timeline that keeps the tension high, and moments of unexpected humor that make the pages fly, this is the kind of book you’ll want to talk about the moment you finish.

Breathe In, Bleed Out By Brian McAuley

Brian McAuley knows exactly how to deliver what horror and thriller fans crave in Breathe In, Bleed Out. This final girl slasher ticks all the right boxes, serving up inventive, fast-paced, and satisfyingly gory kills that never feel recycled. At the heart of the story is Hannah—a grieving woman struggling with vivid hallucinations and a borderline addiction after losing her fiancé. When her former college friends take her to a remote wellness retreat near Joshua Tree, the lines between healing and horror quickly blur. Is this a sanctuary, or a cult with something far more sinister lurking beneath the surface?

Set in a tech-free, isolated desert, the story turns isolation into pure dread—no help, no signal, and no one you can truly trust. Hannah’s trauma becomes a living nightmare, as her emotional unraveling and ghostly visions make her a classic unreliable narrator. Perfectly placed red herrings keep readers guessing, while the deaths—tied chillingly to hot springs, yoga studios, and spiritual rituals—stay true to slasher roots but feel fresh and brutal. Hannah’s Final Girl status is far from typical; she’s flawed, vulnerable, and deeply human. Her survival isn’t about perfection, but resilience in the face of grief, fear, and disbelief. Breathe In, Bleed Out is a tense, twisted ride that cuts deep and refuses to let go.

Spider To The Fly By J. H. Markert

If J. H. Markert writes it, I will read it.  Period.  No questions asked. Every. Single. Time.  Add in a serial killer and I-64 in Kentucky – well – hot damn – excuse me while I read.  HA!

A chilling game of cat and mouse like nothing I’ve read before. Meet Ellie Isles—mother, survivor, and unwitting link to a serial killer known only as The Spider. Leaving a trail of bodies along the I-64 corridor between Lexington and Louisville, The Spider’s victims all share a gruesome detail: each one has died from multiple spider bites. But everything changes when the latest victim is identified. Staring back from the TV screen is a woman who could be Ellie’s twin. From that moment on, Ellie’s life spirals into obsession. She becomes consumed with the victims, their eerie similarities, and the invisible threads that connect them. What begins as a personal investigation evolves into a best-selling true crime book and an online community determined to expose the truth. But the closer Ellie gets to the web’s center, the more dangerous the game becomes.

Spiders and their webs have long symbolized the quiet, creeping danger of deceit—and in the hands of an author like JH Markert, that danger becomes hauntingly vivid.   Deceit, manipulation, betrayal and the devastating consequences are meticulously woven onto each page as the reader is taken through a journey to find the truth while living the consequences of decisions made decades earlier.  Innocence is destroyed and the world is changed in ways that you will never see coming.  The twists and turns are relentless, leaving you never really knowing what the truth is and how deep the secrets go. I can promise you this – (1) You will have questions (2) You will want more  and (3) You will agree this book needs to be made into a series ASAP.

8114 By Joshua Hull

Paul Early is a podcaster, mostly because he really doesn’t know what else to do.  He starts with a story of a student that he went to school with, Adam Benny, who was missing.  Paul did not think about the repercussions of his actions from this podcast.  When his world starts to crumble around him, Paul is suddenly called back to his hometown where he finds that one of his best friends committed suicide in the house where he was raised.

8114 South State Road 67 is more than a childhood home, it is a place of history and horror.  A place of secrets, infection, disease, rot and contagion.   It is a place that is calling Paul Early back because of his mistakes, and it is hungry.  This book is both immersive and graphic. The reader will begin to wonder if they can actually see and smell what is happening.  Hull perfectly mixes supernatural, horror and psychological thriller elements, peppered with some dark humor making this a must read for horror fans. Warning - read with the lights on.

A Noble Sin By Andrew Bridgeman

Welcome back, Emma Noble — took you long enough! (Just kidding… mostly.) Emma returns in full force, breaking arms and belting Dancing Queen when she spots a girl in trouble during a routine traffic stop on I-95. True to form, she’s relentless in following her moral compass. She never backs down from a fight and often charges straight into one — always in pursuit of the truth and to protect those around her. But this time, what she uncovers hits too close to home.

When Emma’s brought in for a polygraph, she’s quickly entangled in a string of murders — a coder, a software engineer, and a banker, all somehow connected. And when her father, Sam Noble, becomes a person of interest, Emma knows something doesn’t add up. She's granted (and sometimes takes) just enough space to do her own digging — with Uncle Gunny by her side. (Side note: Uncle Gunny is hilarious and easily my favorite character. If there's a spin-off in the works, count me in!)

I loved how the story is laid out in two parallel timelines, each from a different POV across nine days, before colliding in a powerful final act.

Bridgeman drops readers straight into the action — from Burger King wrappers to roadside oddities, from the stifling tension inside a cult compound to the chaos of a shootout. The pacing is spot-on, with perfectly timed reveals that let you piece the mystery together alongside Emma. The characters are raw, real, and unforgettable. By the end, you’ll feel like you know them.

All I can say is — I need the next chapter. ASAP.

The Locked Ward By Sarah Pekkanen

Sarah Pekkanen - this is a banger. Every book you have written or co-written just seems to get better! The Locked Ward is best going in blind, so avoid spoilers. Just know that there will be plenty of perfectly placed red herrings on this journey! Told between two alternating POV’s with two unreliable characters - Mandy, who owns a bar and recently lost her parents and Georgia, a wealthy socialite accused of murder - the reader follows these to women finding out how they and their families are connected. The novel delves into complex themes like family dynamics, politics, wealth and power, and the deep, often complicated bond between sisters, especially twins.

This book grabbed my attention right from the start. Sarah Pekkanen's portrayal of a mental hospital ward is unmatched. The eerie mix of unsettling tension and the complexities of misunderstood individuals make a challenging environment to maintain your sanity. I genuinely believe Sarah did her research while writing this novel; it felt like I was right there on the locked ward with Georgia from the very first page. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. It’s a nail-biting, can't-put-it-down story that keeps you hooked until the very end. So, prepare for a thrilling ride!

The White Crow By Michael Robotham

Let’s get the business out of the way—yes, The White Crow is Book 2, and yes, it absolutely works as a standalone. But let’s be honest: the moment you finish it, you’ll be hunting down When You Are Mine. Michael Robotham doesn’t just write thrillers—he crafts stories that grip you from the first page and never let go; with a linear timeline and multiple POV’s you will fly through this one! From the moment we meet Philomena McCarthy, a London cop caught between her badge and her family’s criminal past, you know you’re in for a taut, high-stakes ride.

Robotham has a gift for creating characters who feel like people you might actually meet—complex, contradictory, and achingly real. Phil is fierce but vulnerable.  She is part bad ass and part bleeding heart but always guided by her moral compass, even when the easiest choice would be to look the other way. Every character choice matters, every motive feels loaded, and trust is a dangerous game.

And Robatham’s London? It’s no cardboard cutout; it’s textured, moody, and fully immersive, from the underground tunnels and the fog-drenched streets to gangsters, politics and Bonfire Night. The setting hums with atmosphere, pulling you deeper into a suspense story that’s as smart as it is intense. He knows exactly when to hold back and when to hit the gas, building suspense in expertly measured sparks that ignite into a full-blown blaze by the end.  I cant say enough about this book. The White Crow proves once again that Robotham is in a league of his own. (PS – I need more Philomena!)

The Confessions By Paul Bradley Carr

This technothriller grabbed me from page one and never let go. Set in a near-future world dominated by LLIAM—a powerful AI that influences nearly every life decision—the story is full of twists you won’t see coming and so close to reality it’s genuinely mind-blowing. LLIAM is more than CHATGPT or Alexa, this is the kind of AI that basically runs people's lives (think: your food, your dating life, how to get away with murder – literally everything), the plot takes a hard left when LLIAM vanishes and suddenly everyone starts getting exposed by terrifyingly personal confessions.

What follows is pure chaos—humans turning on each other, corporations crumbling, secrets erupting like landmines. It’s twisty, smart, and way too close to reality for my comfort (I mean that in a good way). Carr clearly knows the tech world, and that insider edge makes it feel scarily possible. Fast-paced, addictive, and honestly? A little too real. This is less of a thriller and more of a wake-up call disguised as a really great read.

Departure 37 By Scott Carson

In 1962, the U.S. was gripped by Cold War paranoia—focused on nuclear threats, communist expansion, outpacing the Soviets,  Vietnam and the space race. Fast forward to 2025, and the focus has shifted to a power competition with China and Russia, where the battles are digitally fought through cyberattacks, AI warfare, and the race for technological dominance. Departure 37 takes place in both.  Scott Carson has managed to plant enough seeds of truth in both timelines to totally f with my head and tell an amazing, unforgettable story.  It’s historical fiction, speculative science, and eerie horror all at once, and somehow it works.

You get espionage flashbacks from 1962, and modern tech paranoia wrapped in one deeply entertaining, slightly (maybe totally) unhinged ride. Carson threads the dual timelines with precision, connecting a covert 1962 military experiment to a chilling 2025 aviation crisis. When pilots begin receiving impossible phone calls warning them not to fly, and a teenager in Maine spots a strange balloon near a forgotten B-52 wreck, the novel's eerie premise locks into place. What follows is a smart, speculative exploration of how history’s darkest secrets rarely stay buried—and how our technological leaps may come with haunting consequences.

The Ever End By Audrey Wilson

From the prologue to the ending, this eerily unsettling blend of thriller and cult horror will consume you!

Margo’s earliest memories begin at age 4 of a man in the shadows who begs to be let in.  His voice can come to her in moments when she is scared or alone and he promises to protect her.  He is doing his best to take her away from her mother, but she always wonders – is this just a dream or is he just a shadow?  What kind of man can promise everything

Margo has recently lost her mother after a fierce and unsettling battle with cancer.  She meets a man, Sam, on the ride to work.  Sam says everything perfectly.  He has a million dollar smile and the ability to make her no longer feel alone.  Six months into this perfect relationship, he asks Margo to marry him.  When she says yes, it is time to take her home to meet his parents.

Sam is from a large family.  They have been following a televangelist for years and fully believe what he preaches.  Sam has never seemed religious and neither is Margo, but for the man she loves, she will respect his family.  She just needs to get through the week.  Little things along the way seem off.  Not enough to jump ship, but enough to make Margo wonder if she is seeing things or if it is really happening.

As the week progresses, Sam and his family seem to have cocooned Margo – and not in a good way.  They are controlling and nearly robotic.  While they seem welcoming, she must adhere to their rules.  Little red flags turn into giant screaming warnings as the story progresses, but it may be too late for Margo.

Fade In By Kyle Mills

Salam al-Fayed, aka Fade, is seemingly unstoppable all while riding shotgun with death.  As a former Navy SEAL, Fade is the epitome of strength, resilience, and precision.  He was known as one of the deadliest operatives and an asset that could not be lost.  However, when he steps in front of a sniper’s bullet to save a friend, Fade is declared clinically dead.

Due to his high value, Fade was brought back to life, receiving top-tier rehabilitation through the best money and technology can offer—on one condition: he must join a paramilitary unit led by a shadowy organization run by a billionaire with unknown ambitions. When a new threat out of China emerges, and the group he works for has no political affiliation, Fade and his team are mobilized.    There is always an end game and Fade questions who is behind this?  Who will benefit?  What is the price to be paid?

Fade is a quirky, world-weary smart ass. While being seemingly cold to the killing of others while on a mission, he still has a very strong moral compass. He has an innate sense of strategic and situational awareness. This is exactly what readers of this genre need.  New characters who are relatable, flawed and totally badass.

Fade In is classic Kyle Mills—gripping, action-packed, and filled with twists that will leave you speechless. Readers go to a place where the stakes are high, and the world Mills builds is one you won’t want to leave. If you're a fan of intense thrillers with complex characters and high stakes, this one is definitely for you. Mills has once again proven that he’s a master of the genre.

Whatever Kills The Pain By CW Blackwell

Whatever Kills the Pain is a gritty, unflinching collection of short stories. They are a raw, relentless exploration of life on the edge. Characters are thrown into violent, morally complex, and unpredictable situations that test both body and mind. From high-stakes car chases and shootouts to the quieter but no less grueling struggles of work and survival, the writing immerses readers in tension and immediacy. What’s remarkable is the way human vulnerability shines through—amid crime, injury, and moral compromise, there is still reflection, care, and moments of fragile connection.

At their core, these stories are about survival in all its forms: physical, emotional, and ethical. They ask what we’re willing to do to protect ourselves and those we care about, and whether hope or redemption is possible in a world that often seems bent on chaos. From economic injustice to systemic violence, every line draws you in, making you feel like a part of the world Blackwell exposes—harsh, vulnerable, and impossible to ignore.  Even though the stories are short, every word carries weight, every detail and every character matters  The writing is unflinching, visceral, and, at times, unsettling—but it’s also deeply human, reminding readers that even in the darkest circumstances, resilience and empathy can persist.

Remote: The Five By Eric Rickstad

The Five seamlessly picks up where Book 1 left off, continuing the adventure and deepening the story leaving death and even more questions in its wake.  What if the program, Stargazer, is more than what we all thought it was?  What if those placed in the program were more than just working in the intelligence community locating some of the most dangerous people in the world?

FBI Agent Lukas Stark and his associate Gilles Garnier have captured The Tableau Killer, aka Q, and instead of taking him to prison for what he has done, Q ends back up with the program and has ‘escaped’ custody.  However, it appears that Q is on a mission to uncover what has really been happening on the compound that he was raised in for generations.

There is a second storyline that is popping up in the shadows regarding Agent Stark’s father.  Little clues show up on the pages when you are least expecting it.  There has to be more to this story than what we realize and I cannot wait for this to all flesh out and learn how it is all connected.

Each piece, or person, of the puzzle, when placed correctly, forms the whole.  Yet every individual remains unaware of their role in the larger picture.  Who is at the top of the pyramid and pulling the strings? In the end, what is the desired outcome?  Control? Perfection? The bottom line is that morality does not play a role in what is being done inside the gates at the Institute for the Advancement of the Human Mind.  If you thought Q was dangerous, he has nothing on the dark, and sinister program that created him and the power that it can wield inside a lab.

Edge Of Honor By Brad Thor

My mom introduced me to Brad Thor and the Scot Harvath series, so when this came early, I had to let her read it first. As soon as my mom finished, she said “Listen, after the first thirty chapters my eyes were burning, but it is so excellent I just had to keep reading.”

Thankfully, it made it back to my house and I have so much to say.

The action’s fast, the stakes are sky-high, and the conspiracy is ripped so close from today’s headlines it almost burns your hands. In Edge of Honor, Scot Harvath tries to start fresh, but reality doesn’t let him. He’s pulled into a web of dirty politics, shadow governments, and neo-Nazi operatives working like hired guns—maybe for Russia, maybe for something worse. It’s eerie how close this feels to our current chaos. It’s a peek behind the curtains of the headlines. The handlers, the fundraisers, the strategically placed traitors—it’s a punch to the gut, and I mean that as a compliment.

Thor is the best when it comes to pacing—this thing moves, and when it bites, it bites hard. You’ve got sabotage, mercenaries with ties to shady companies, and Senator Blackwell’s slimy presence casting a long shadow. The ending is very different than we are used to and now we’ve got questions—big ones. But that’s what Thor does best: he pulls you in, gets your blood boiling, and makes dang sure you’ll be back for the next one. Bring it! And as my Mom says (in her own Scot Harvath impersonation), “Let’s bust these suckers wide open.”

Of Flesh And Blood By Hunter Burke & N.L. Lavin

Of Flesh and Blood is a gripping fusion of horror, folklore, and crime, told through the lens of a unique narrator — a psychiatrist investigating the dark past of his own cousin, the man accused of being the infamous Cajun Cannibal. What sets this novel apart is its immersive, case file-style narrative. Medical records, autopsy reports, police transcripts, historical accounts, and rich regional folklore are all woven together to create a chillingly realistic experience. It reads like a true crime novel — one that feels unnervingly real.

The setting is deeply atmospheric. South Louisiana, with its shadowy bayous and thick, humid air, becomes a character in its own right. The authors do an exceptional job of bringing the region to life through vivid descriptions of the food, traditions, superstitions, and landscape. The folklore is especially compelling — I found myself diving down internet rabbit holes about the Rougarou and other local legends. With a trip to New Orleans coming up in September, I’m already planning to explore more of these eerie tales in person.

The dialogue stands out for its authenticity. It shifts naturally between characters, reflecting their backgrounds, voices, and personalities. (Mitch in particular.)  Southern horror folklore has a distinctive flavor — a haunting mix of gothic atmosphere, regional history, and supernatural dread. Of Flesh and Blood delivers on every front. It’s the kind of story that stays with you, unsettling and absorbing in equal measure.

The Red Letter By Daniel G. Miller

Hazel Cho is back, and she’s better than ever! A quick-witted, sharp-tongued private detective with a knack for getting under people’s skin, Hazel is the kind of character you just can't get enough of. Each case she tackles grows more intense, but this time, things might hit a little too close to home.

After setting up shop with her partner Kenny, Hazel is living the dream. But when an old friend, Shavali, reaches out for help, things take a dramatic turn. Shavali is defending a young man accused of murdering a priest, and with just a week left before trial, she’s convinced her client is innocent. But why did the case make it to trial so quickly? When the murder involves a Catholic priest, poisoning, and ties to a child abuse settlement, the archdiocese—and everyone connected to it—wants to bury the truth fast. As Hazel digs deeper, she uncovers more than she bargained for: more questions, more answers, a web of red herrings, ominous red letters, and dead bodies that pile up faster than she can process.

As always, my predictions were off. By 50%, by 80%—I was completely wrong! The ending completely blindsided me, and all my guesses about how it would unfold were tossed out the window. I can only hope there’s more of Hazel Cho to come. From the moment she dives into the investigation, it’s clear: she’s a private detective like no other. With her razor-sharp mind, relentless drive, and a complexity that sticks with you long after the case is closed, Hazel is a character who leaves an indelible mark.

Welcome To Cottonmouth By Jay S. Bell

Cottonmouth is not just a small desolate town in East Texas; it is the island of misfit and retired spies and operatives. (Yep, you read that right!) Their secrets and loyalties run deeper than the scars they carry.  Each individual who is sent to this ‘retirement community’ has a story and a special set of skills.  Not only that, but they are high value targets to the right (wrong) people and are under the mindful watch of the US Government and their assigned handler, Lofland.

Devlin Mahoney is the group’s defacto leader and the owner/operator of the Cottonmouth Motor Lodge.  When a woman and her charge break down and end up staying there, things start to get squirrely.  Britte and Siobhan are running for the lives from a very powerful, controlling and money hungry man, Milos Stankovic.  He has deep pockets, dirt on the right people and a seemingly endless group of underlings willing to die for him.  So, when Britte and Siobhan are not returned to him immediately, Stankovic and his crew decide to kick the hornet’s next in Cottonmouth and a can of whoop ass has been opened.

Each member of this community of misfits has not only a special set of skills, but a back story and history and a heart.  This book is full of dark humor and one liners that will make you literally laugh out loud, action scenes that jump off the pages and relationships that grow in a way that you will want more.  I could not get enough of this book.  It was so fast paced, and each page unraveled a little bit more background and descriptions of people like Hannah, Asim, Zivon, Roxy, Chan, Bobby and others.  Their descriptions, nicknames and banter bring them to life.  Let me leave you with this – I need more.  I do not want this adventure that centers around Cottonmouth to end.  This book delivers action-packed whiplash and hooks you with a story driven by heart, grit, and the unshakable pull to do the right thing.

Gone Dark By Ryan Steck

When Matthew and Emily start their day, there is no way they could have been expecting the fallout.  Emily, an ER doctor, has a patient and former school mate,  die of a drug overdose.  Her heart is in the right place when she contacts the prescribing doctor, but when she gets home with her son an intruder decides that she needs to be silenced.  Luckily, she is a Redd and a fighter and does not relent.

Matthew is called in on the same day when a group of smoke jumpers goes missing.  The Sheriff can count on Matt and his ability to do what is asked of him.  What no one knew is that he was following an assassin of sorts straight into the fire.  Not only does Matthew ride the fire out and report back what is happening to the smoke jumpers, he brings out a little boy named Jack.

Thriller readers never believe in a coincidence – so how are these two connected?  Matt, Emily and Jack are all seemingly targets.  Who is behind this and what will they do to make sure there are no loose ends?  As the body count rises, the question remains – who will benefit and at what cost?

Ryan Steck has a way with relentless nonstop action that keeps the pages turning long into the night! I am anxious to see if Montana can hold Matthew Redd and his family.  He seems destined for bigger things.
