Heart of Glass revisits the world of Wonderland, and while this story absolutely stands on its own, I can't imagine a better excuse to pick up its predecessor if you haven't already. Twenty-five years after the infamous Carnival Killer confessed to murdering Lorelei, a deathbed documentary changes everything when he insists she was never one of his victims. Just as Wonderland prepares to reopen, another woman's body is discovered on the shoreline, and the comfortable certainty surrounding a long-closed case begins to crack. In Seaside, everyone seems to shrug and say, "Well...it's just Seaside," but Hillier knows that beneath small-town familiarity, secrets have a way of refusing to stay buried.
Multiple timelines and shifting perspectives gradually piece together the truth, revealing characters who are wonderfully complicated rather than easily categorized as heroes or villains. Every revelation reshapes what came before, turning assumptions into questions and certainty into doubt. Friendship, survivor's guilt, memory, ambition, and the stories people create to live with impossible choices all become just as important as uncovering a killer. By the time the final pieces click into place, Heart of Glass has become far more than a serial killer mystery. It is a smart, emotionally layered novel about the consequences of a single night that continue to echo across decades. Jennifer Hillier once again delivers the kind of thriller that reminds me why she remains one of my favorite authors.
