Black Fleet Crisis By Conor Bender

Conor Bender is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors, and Black Fleet Crisis, the first book in his new Horizon War series, is another terrific example of why! The action begins with a terrorist attack on the USNS Seay at the American naval installation in Rota, Spain. The strike threatens America's ability to reinforce its NATO allies, while the disappearance of an advanced electronic-warfare drone, the PHANTOM-RX8, makes matters worse. What looks like an isolated attack soon reveals a dangerous conspiracy with the potential to ignite a global conflict. It's an unsettlingly plausible premise that immediately had me hooked.

At the center of the story is Shaw Carradine, a former Royal Marine and special activities operator who heads security for Pendrake Systems, the defense technology company run by his cousin Dick. As the stolen drone puts Pendrake under scrutiny, both cousins are drawn into the crisis. I particularly enjoyed their dynamic and the roles they play as the threat escalates. Shaw also reunites with CIA case officer Marcus "Bantam" Roberts, a former teammate whose relationship with Shaw was shattered during a disastrous covert operation. Their uneasy partnership adds a personal edge to the action. As further attacks strike American military installations across Europe, they uncover a plot involving high-level Russian ultranationalists intent on crippling Western defenses ahead of a Russian offensive. This plot leads them directly to New York City and there Bender takes up the action even more.

What impressed me most was how convincingly Bender weaves military logistics, advanced technology, and geopolitical tensions into an exciting thriller. His experience as a former Marine Corps officer and military logistician shows in his attention to vulnerabilities in military supply chains and infrastructure—weaknesses that could undermine military power before a conventional battle even begins. That realism made the danger feel uncomfortably possible. Add compelling characters, plenty of action, and an international conspiracy, and Bender delivers exactly the kind of military thriller I love. If you're a fan of Tom Clancy or military thrillers, Black Fleet Crisis deserves a place on your reading list. Knowing The Horizon War series is just beginning makes it even better. I can't wait to see what Bender has in store for the Carradines next!
