Assassin's Dawn By Ward Larsen

assassins-dawn-ward-larsen-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

Ward Larsen has just released his latest novella, Assassins Dawn, and boy does it read like a full length novel! This plot is intricate in a short amount of time with a full length story arc that feels like the script for a Hollywood blockbuster.

In this novella, we get to see our favorite Mossad assassin, David Slaton, and where his motives came from. As we start this novella, it has been three years since Slaton has lost the two most important people in his life. After this tragedy, Mossad recruits Slaton, and he has been on the hunt for who committed this atrocity ever since.

When the whereabouts of the financial guru behind this infamous terrorist attack surfaces, David and his team are sent on a mission to bug his computer, and to glean as much information as they can. As the mission tumbles out of control, the team is put under a microscope for a possible murder charge. During all this, the mastermind of the terrorist attack that rocked David’s world resurfaces, and David will stop at nothing until he has been neutralized.

Assassins Dawn is a must read prequel for any diehard David Slaton fan. Also, anyone new to the David Slaton series wanting a peek behind the curtain to understand Slaton before diving into the series, can’t go wrong with this novella! Either way a must read!

Black Ice By Brad Thor

Brad Thor is back with his 20th Scot Harvath novel, Black Ice, and boy does he deliver! No one quite does it like Thor with his geopolitical fueled rocket of a story line. I really enjoyed watching Harvath do what he does best: bring the hurt to some bad actors hell bent on doing harm to America. That he has his full team, and some Cold War era veteran fighters behind him, creates a crazy fun story arc that keeps the story line driving till the end!

In this 20th installment, Scot has been enjoying a summer in Norway with his beautiful girlfriend Solvi. Scot has found love again, but he knows he must return Stateside soon to return to his other love: defending the USA from the enemy abroad. While enjoying all that Oslo has to offer, he does not know that this fight will come to him while in Norway. Scot, Solvi, and the Carlton Group uncover a dastardly plan to use a valuable American resource found in Norway against the USA. Can Harvath and his crew span the far north in time to stop this global super power plan before it is too late?

Black Ice will for sure be the blockbuster thriller novel of the summer! Be sure to get your copy today, and be in the know of the latest antics of Scot, Solvi, and the Carlton Group.

Sleeping Bear By Connor Sullivan

connot-sullivan-sleeping-bear-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

Connor Sullivan rips onto the thriller stage with his debut novel Sleeping Bear! It’s expertly written with great intrigue, suspense, and great reveals throughout the read. This novel is primarily based in Alaska, and as someone who grew up there, I highly enjoyed it. It made me homesick in portions with the descriptions of locations. Really great read all around!

In this novel, we meet Cassie Gale, a US Army veteran, who comes to Alaska to take advantage of the great expanse of solitude the state offers. When Cassie goes missing, she becomes one of the thousands to disappear from the Alaska wilds. When her father James Gale, a man with great skill, comes to search for her, it becomes glaringly clear that this is not a normal missing person case. In fact, nothing is as it appears in regards to Cassie’s disappearance, or with the countless other lost soles from the Alaskan wilderness.

Gale has a past that not even his own daughters know about, and it has reared its ugly head and taken his youngest daughter. As Cassie wakes, she must rely upon every ounce of grit she posses to survive, for the stakes are high in the far north.

Sullivan has created a cast of strong characters in an impossible situation. The reader feels every bit of desperation and fear the characters go through. Since each character has this moving depth to them, the reader has an emotional roller coaster ride throughout the entire book. This is a great debut and I’m so excited to see what else he has in store!

Target Acquired By Don Bentley

don-bentley-target-acquired-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

In Target Acquired, Don Bentley joins the ranks of the greats who have continued Tom Clancys’ visionary saga of the Jack Ryan universe. Bentley joins Mark Greaney, Mark Cameron, Mike Maden, and Grant Blackwood in continuing Tom Clancys’ vision of the Jack Ryan universe, and oh what a stellar job Bentley does in the 31st Jack Ryan novel! Fans who know Don Bentley from his own set of novels, the Matt Drake series, have come to love his blistering action scenes, world encompassing plots, and witty dialog, and Bentley does not disappoint in Target Acquired. This latest installment will create more diehard fans of the Jack Ryan universe chomping at the bit for more!

Target Acquired starts off with Jack Ryan Junior on a simple mission in Tel Aviv with the promise of some well deserved R&R at the conclusion of this simple task. As he sits at a street side cafe watching the city life unfurl around him, Jack sees a mother with her young son taking in the local sites. Something about the boy captivates Jack, but when an assassin comes up behind mother and son, bent on killing her, Jack jumps into action to save them both. This action puts Jack under the microscope of some dangerous actors, and what started off as a simple mission, turns into a mad dash to uncover a dastardly plot.

In the thriller world, the name Tom Clancy is synonymous with legend. Clancy created a world that diehard thriller fans know and love. That this series has continued long after his passing is a monumental testament to the world he created. Don Bentley is the latest author to take the baton that is the Jack Ryan universe and run with it. Bentley has added his twist to the Ryan universe creating a storyline that will be catapulted into the next generation of thrillers.

Grasping Smoke By Michael Hearns

michael-hearns-grasping-smoke-sarah-waltonfw.jpg

Michael Hearns is not messing around in his second novel with the speed and violence of action he employs throughout these pages. Hearns waves a beautiful tapestry of the seedy underbelly of 1998 Miami as undercover Vice Intelligence and Narcotics (VIN) Detective Cade Taylor tries to navigate a case he just happened to stumble upon and is progressively pulled deeper in.

As Cade careens upon a high speed investigation, it morphs into something far more sinister with each new dead body that appears on the streets throughout Miami. Cade and a detective from Miami homicide must put their combined knowledge together to stop this killer before they strike again.

Hearns created a wildly entertaining and grippingly real read. He writes the streets of Miami that only a native Miamian could with such detail that I feel every street corner and see the sunset dancing of off the water. We meet Cade six months post divorce, and we watch him grapple with what kind of person is he, and what does he want to do with his life: does he continue with what he knows, or does he change it up? This story line added a layer of stress and heartbreak to our character that made him so much more grounded and real. This was a gripping and gritty read that will take the reader on one wild ride throughout the streets of Miami that is not to be missed!

The Devil's Hand By Jack Carr

devils-hand-jack-carr-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

Jack Carr has done it again in his fourth novel in the James Reece series, The Devil’s Hand. This is a timely, intricate, and well paced read. Carr is known for his great detail yet fast reads, and he has refined that skill in this latest installment.

This novel is set in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was worried how I would like this, but it was written to where I wasn’t smothered by it. It fit the story well, and added that sense of realism that the reader can envision themselves in this scenario right along with the characters. It also leant itself to one scary plot!

This novel is set around the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. As an American, reading a novel with this theme at its center is a truly sobering experience. The Devil’s Hand asks what has the enemy learned from over two decades of extended fighting? What have they gleaned from observing our media? That is a truly terrifying question, and Carr tackles it with great literary expertise, yet with the clout of someone who has spent a great deal of time on this subject.

This was a stellar well researched read. It had a beautiful mix of brutal fight scenes and well thought out character development. Readers of Jack Carr’s books know how intense his fight scenes can get, and he does not disappoint in this one! I really think Jack Carr has hit his stride. He has cemented his status in the thriller genre, and fans the world over can’t wait for more!

The Beirut Protocol By Joel Rosenberg

joel-rosenberg-beiruit-protocol-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

In The Beirut Protocol, Joel Rosenberg’s fourth novel in the Marcus Ryker series, the reader is thrown into the action within the first sentence! This was my first time reading a novel by Rosenberg, and he did not disappoint.

When we meet up with Marcus Ryker and his two colleagues, we are immediately immersed in a gun fight for our hero’s lives. All through this sequence, I found myself beyond worried if they were going to make it. I knew nothing of these characters, but I was invested from page one in their survival.

Marcus Ryker and his partner, Kailea Curtis, are both DSS special agents sent as an advance team to the Israel-Lebanon border prior to the Secretary of State’s arrival for a crucial Israeli and Saudi peace deal. As the team works with an Israeli liaison on this advance trip, they are caught in the cross hairs of a Hezbollah ambush. The team, after a vicious fire fight, are caught, and a joint US and Israeli response is immediately sent to get them back. The pressure is on to rescue them, for if this advance teams’ true identity comes to light, no amount of negotiations will get them back.

Marcus Ryker is portrayed in the novel as being a maverick and a person who does not toe the company line. He is an individual who in the past has taken impossible situations and turned them upside down. He has also made powerful enemies on the world stage who would love nothing more than to have Ryker as a prisoner.

Due to his lone wolf ways, many in his organization do not care for his tactics, however Ryker has made friends with individuals high in the government who hold some serious sway. A manhunt is unleashed to get Ryker and his team back, and they will be forced to think fast on their feet as they jet around Lebanon in search of these high value individuals.

The Beirut Protocol was a high stakes fast read with terrifying global implications. This novel has the “ripped from the headlines” plot that thriller fans have come to love in this genre. The reader roots for Ryker through the entire novel; celebrating victories and mourning failures. I have to say, I was nervous for the torture scenes, but it makes you cheer for the victories that Ryker has all the more. The Beirut Protocol was a well done geo-political read that I feel fans of the genre will enjoy!

The Outside Man By Don Bentley

outside-man-don-bentley-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

For Don Bentley’s second Matt Drake novel, The Outside Man, hold on to your hats because Bentley hits the throttle from chapter one and doesn’t let off! Bentley penned a wild ride in this installment, and he cemented that Matt Drake should be added in the lineup of literary greats in the thriller genre. The Outside Man is told entirely through first person point of view, and the reader gets Matt Drake’s full snarky attitude on display. This is a welcome comic relief when things really hit the fan for Drake and crew!

The Outside Man starts off with former DIA agent Matt Drake pondering what’s next in his life after the DIA. He has given up so much for his country, and now he gets to spend quality time with his beautiful wife. However, when Drake is caught in an ambush in the streets of Austin, Texas, he gets a glimpse of what he has been missing...action and excitement that only the work can provide. As Drake sleuths through who was behind this audacious hit, he discovers this goes much deeper and involves a dangerous person from his past. To find answers, Drake will be pushed in the most unimaginable ways.

The Outside Man is a crazy fast read! If you are looking for a high adventure, high stakes read, this is your novel. This is book two in the Matt Drake series, and I can’t wait to see what Don Bentley has in store for us next!

Relentless By Mark Greaney

relentless- mark greaney-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

When Mark Greaney releases a new thriller, we know it's going to be phenomenal. Greaney is one of the authors who has set the bar high in the thriller universe; all in a genre with already established heavy hitters. Greaney has carved his own niche in this thriller genre with his wildly successful Gray Man series, and his latest novel in this series, Relentless, has only cemented his ranking in the thriller world. Greaney is known for his intricate plots and blistering action sequences, and because of this, he has created such an avid reader base who hangs on every word and anxiously awaits the latest installment of the Gray Man.

In Greaneys’ tenth novel in the Gray Man series, Relentless, Court Gentry is tasked to scoop up a missing CIA agent who resurfaces in Venezuela. However, the CIA and Gentry are not the only group who are interested in nabbing this wayward American. After getting caught up with this group, Court finds himself in their crosshairs, and he must avoid them while trying to unravel this convoluted mission with international implications.

We also meet up with Zoya Zakharova, who while trying to obtain her objective, pings on the radar of an entity who wishes to do her harm. Court and Zoya try to unravel all the pieces of this perplexing international mission, all while evading two groups who are bent on their demise. Over time, as both groups learn who it is they are hunting, the stakes are high as they strive to be the one to take out the infamous Gray Man.

Greaney picks up about three weeks after the ending of book nine, and this is about the most vulnerable we have ever seen Court. In past novels, Court has been chased, shot at, and dragged through everything imaginable. However, due to the events of book nine, Court is left fighting for his life in a whole new way. Court Gentry must fight his way through not only the physical barriers thrown at him, but also through the battle the rages inside him. This will call on Gentry to be relentless if he wants to survive this latest mission.

I can’t recommend Relentless enough! Mark Greaney delivers a high speed action thriller novel that hits all the right notes. We get the intricacies of an international thriller with the high octane action sequences...a perfect combination!

Prodigal Son By Gregg Hurwitz

gregg-hurwitz-prodigal-son-sarah-walton.jpg

What are the events and experiences that make you who you are? With Evan, he has always been Orphan X. He has never experienced what his life could have been if he was never put in the system. As Evan stumbles through domestic life, he gets to be in a new “training ground” he has yet to fully experience in his sessions with Jack.

In Prodigal Son, Evan gets to confront someone who had the power to completely alter his life. Throughout the book, Evan grapples with this persons decision, and he is faced with his own internal battle of how to live with this.

It seems like every book, Gregg Hurwitz increases the ante for Evan. However, I can’t even begin to wrap my head around what Evan goes through in this novel! Hurwitz always adds a level of heart wrenching story line to all of his Orphan X novels, but he outdid himself here. We get the technical aspect that we’ve come to know and love, but we get this amped up level of gut wrenching in this installment. On top of all that, get ready for the ending! Although this will not be the first time I say this...the next Orphan X novel can not come fast enough!

The Hidden Vector By Mathew Snyder

hidden-vector-mathew-snyder-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

In Mathew Snyder’s novel, The Hidden Vector, we meet Ethan Pierce; a sharp targeting officer for the CIA who’s brash actions often get him, and those around him, in trouble. Pierce is very good at what he does, so good that it has consumed every part of his life to the point where he is left holding the pieces.

Pierce is sent to investigate a terrorist attack, and in the process comes to discover that a brilliant virologist, who was on the doomed flight, has come up missing. This virologist was in possession of a cure for a manufactured virus, but these terrorists that Pierce is after have more of a nefarious goal than meets the eye: to turn this virus into a bioweapon. Pierce is on a mad hunt to solve this case before he loses what he holds most dear.

On the flip side in the agency is Paul Corso who is Ethan Pierce’s supervisor. He and Pierce have a good working relationship, and as Ethan is working to solve this case, Corso comes across a massive conspiracy plot within headquarters. Both men must race against the clock as the mastermind for both plots begin to look into their lives, and target what they both cherish to stop them.

I enjoyed this read because it asked the question what is the consequence of lying? In a profession where lying can mean the difference of life and death, it seeps itself into Pierce’s personal life, and wreaks havoc. As Pierce works to solve this case, he is confronted with this question when he gets close with someone who is not as they appear. Pierce gets caught up with this individual, and is forced to consider this.

Hidden Vector was a gripping espionage thriller with stellar “oh crap!” moments sprinkled throughout. The stakes are high with consequences that leave Pierce and Corso scrambling to solve this mystery before it is too late.

Total Power By Kyle Mills (Vince Flynn)

kyle-mills-total-power-vince-flynn-best-thriller-books-sarah-walton.jpg

If I had to use one word to describe Total Power, it would be personal. This plot really hit home for me as a reader, and for the characters in the story.

As a reader, it hit home because of how relevant this plot is for today. The world is going through a crisis, and what happens in these pages greatly impacts the world. This plot was severely personal for our characters for the impact it had on them and their friends and families; on their homeland. We feel every twist and turn because it’s happening on our home front. It truly freaked me out!

Mitch Rapp and crew are back in classic snarky fashion, and I loved every back and forth we got! I greatly appreciated the level of detail Mills takes in his book for how he ties previous books by Flynn in them. Long time readers feel that connection to the Flynn days, and it adds that extra level of oomph that drives the plot to its terrifying end. This is another home run by Kyle Mills that will go down in history.

This novel continues a story arc that was started several books ago. We get the epic “battle royal” in this as Ember continues the epic gridlock against their equals. Will we possibly see the start of World War III?

This is a fast-paced read, with heart-pounding action, and amazing technical fight scenes. We even get an intricate battle scenes on a Navy warship to name one epic scene! Near Dark By Brad Thor

My one word to describe this book would have to be “retribution.” In Near Dark, we have the continuation of a, thus far, three book story arc. In the first of this arc, we have the mission that leads to the pandemonium to come; the second, we have the hunt, and the beginning of the spiral; and in this book, Harvath has the backing of his team, and is out for retribution.

We get the introduction of a kickass character in this installment! With a very similar flawed background as Harvath, hopefully this could be a teaming of the ages.

Jack Carr brings a whole new edge to the thriller genre. His character development is second to none. The level of detail that most will give to the main character, Carr gives to all of his characters. I really appreciated that, and it brought a whole new level to their actions. The reader really fells the gravity of the entire situation.

Savage Son was so spectacular because it dealt with that most basic human reaction: that fight or flight. That entire read I had that reaction and thought of fight or flight. Also, I loved how Carr would to spotlights of well known Veteran-owned companies! Gave the reader some well needed breaks!

Murphy Murphy And The Case Of Serious Crisis By Keith Hirshland

Keith Hirshland’s novel, Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis, was the novel I did not know I needed to read! This novel was different to what I normally devour, yet it spurred me to keep on unraveling it with its twists and turns, the spot on humor, and the reveal was one I did not see coming! Serious Crisis is a novel I highly recommend if you are looking for a read to keep you on your toes, and to learn a thing or two on redundancies!

The main character, Murphy Murphy, hates redundancies, yet he is the lead detective in the Department of Redundancies Department. His captain approaches him one day with a case of theft of random high priced objects from the members of his niece, Lyndsey’s, rock ‘n roll band. Murphy starts to investigate this random case, when an even more valuable object goes missing...his captain's niece. In a missing persons case, time is of the essence, and Murphy can not afford to overlook anyone. Can Murphy connect the dots in time to find Lyndsey, and the band's missing objects?

Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis was a really good read. It kept me laughing with Murphy’s disdain of redundancies in conversation; however as soon as I thought I had it figured out a new clue would pop up, and I had to keep reading to see where that would lead. Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis is a must read novel, and a gift that keeps on giving long after you put it down.
