The Lightning Girl By Sam Ripley

Sam Ripley has written a tremendously compelling and twisting thriller where as soon as you think you can predict what’s coming, you’re blindsided by a bombshell revelation that’ll make you sit in silence and think deep about what you just read.

Sarah returns home to sell off her father’s house and she can’t get away soon enough. Hidden in the nostalgia of her childhood home is a dark truth: the disappearance of her best friend, Genevieve. Genevieve was struck by lightning and thought herself un-killable as she walked away unscathed. Pretty soon she was drawn to the idea that she’d been chosen to be a powerful force siphoning powers off magic and nature. But a stormy night led to Genevieve falling off a cliff and never being found again. After Sarah starts experiencing haunting visions about her best friend, she sets off on a personal mission to do what she couldn’t do before: catch Genevieve’s murderer. She knows her friend was killed, but no one could prove it before. This time she’s armed with a voice from beyond the grave and her own tenacity to get revenge for her friend who couldn’t be given justice.

Ripley blends psychological and supernatural elements together so meticulously that they work beautifully in tandem to present a mysterious and unexpected narrative where you can’t trust the narrator. The atmospheric tension that Ripley conveys with palpable trepidation makes it so that you’ll want to switch on all the lights as you read.

The Lightning Girl is a fast-paced and terrifically fresh addition to the psychological thriller genre that dabbles in the supernatural with supreme panache and horror, making it one of the most memorable books you’ll read this year.
