The Invisible Enemy By Alma Katsu

Alma Katsu blends her artistic capabilities of delivering both stellar espionage and horror stories in this scary new spy thriller that I wish was just the stuff of make-believe.

Jack Dunn is a terrific CIA operations officer on the cusp of a breakthrough with his asset that would unveil a brand-new technology being worked on by the Russians. Tragedy strikes as Jack is attacked by an invisible force in his hotel room, the neurological effects lingering even years later. With CIA leadership turning a blind eye to his affliction and of those faced similarly by other Americans working against Russia, Jack begins to pick up on the thread. Despite his affliction, he still has his tenacity to see his mission through, even if it costs him his life.

Katsu writes a lean and compelling narrative that feels fresh in the spy genre. While the foes and political conflicts may be familiar to the espionage aficionados, the protagonist and his challenges are intriguing and distinctive. I read this in hours, fascinated by each new development as the narrative starts off steady and then jets off with palpable energy. The story is ever-cerebral with Jack Dunn using his brain more than brawn to investigate the leads that ultimately lead us all to a terrifying and satisfying conclusion with a haunting afterword by the author who shares her own true experiences through this ingeniously crafted thriller.

The Invisible Enemy is a no-brainer pick if you want to dive into a realistic and addictive book with genuine insights into the murky world of spies. Alma Katsu nails it once again!
