The Gray Man’s absence was surely and sorely missed since the last book and for all those who’ve waited, The Dark Union is absolutely worth it.
After the harrowing and deeply personal impact of Gray Man’s last adventure, he faces yet another personal conflict as his brother, Chance, long thought to have been killed in the line of duty as a police officer, reveals he’s not only alive but in a not so different line of work than Court. As Court works towards unveiling the dark secrets of a conglomerate with ties to America’s enemies, he has no clue he’s on a collision course with his past.
Mark Greaney is on a roll with the latest Gray Man stories, exploring more personal grounds for Court and his humanity and vulnerabilities. While the scope gets grander with more powerful threats going back to some of the earliest American history, Greaney masterfully balances it with current and more grounded predicaments for Court as a highly skilled operator but nonetheless human and not so impervious to threats. This lends a greater gravitas to the action sequences with amazing pacing and tactical details that hit just right.
Dark Union feels like two separate stories in one book, as we get to know Chance Gentry more closely with a spotlight on him while also following Court on his own journey. The tension of their ultimate reconciliation is one that continually drives the narrative ahead and the payoff is superb and satisfying. That being said, as much as I enjoyed reading about Chance, there can only be one Gray Man and that is Courtland Gentry. Greaney knows as much as he treats readers to great and witty humor from Court along with tactical badassery. Dark Union is one of the best action thrillers you’ll read in 2027 and you can take this statement to the bank.
