Departure 37 By Scott Carson

Scott Carson's Departure 37 is a masterful blend of Cold War espionage, speculative science fiction, and eerie psychological suspense that will leave readers profoundly unsettled. Immediately, the premise grips you: in 2025, pilots across America receive inexplicable phone calls from their mothers – some long dead – urging them not to fly, leading to an unprecedented nationwide grounding of flights. Simultaneously, a teenager in coastal Maine discovers a strange balloon carrying a note and an old watch connected to a brilliant physicist from 1962. Carson skillfully interweaves these dual timelines, slowly revealing a chilling connection between a forgotten Cold War experiment and the present-day aviation crisis.

Departure 37 mesmerizingly delves into themes of historical secrets refusing to stay buried and the terrifying potential of advanced technology. The main characters, particularly the conflicted physicist Martin Hazelton from 1962 and the resilient teenager Charlie in 2025, have been superbly created to add an emotional depth that grounds the fantastical elements. Carson creates a persistent sense of unease, blurring the lines between what is plausible and what is purely supernatural, forcing readers to question their own perceptions long after the final page.

For those who enjoy thrillers that challenge the mind, provoke thought about humanity's relationship with technology, and leave a lasting impression of unsettling possibilities, Departure 37 is an absolute must-read that delivers on its intriguing premise and sticks with you long after you've finished it. This novel impressively  operates like a high-stakes, extended episode of The Twilight Zone, where the impossible feels disturbingly within reach. Carson manages to build relentless tension through expertly paced reveals and a compelling convergence of past and present events. This isn't just a thriller; it's an experience that will challenge your perceptions.

Gone Dark By Ryan Steck

I used to refer to Ryan Steck as an up-and-coming thriller author, but he has clearly proven himself to be a true giant in the action-thriller genre with his Matthew Redd series. And to no surprise, Ryan’s latest, Gone Dark, is an absolute triumph, delivering pulse-pounding action that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Steck masterfully weaves together multiple compelling plotlines, from a mysterious incident involving smokejumpers amid raging Montana wildfires to the nation’s struggle with the opioid crisis. What truly sets Gone Dark apart is its exceptional blend of high-octane action and deeply resonant character development. Matthew Redd, the former Marine Raider, remains a formidable and compelling protagonist. Steck also skillfully allows us to see Redd’s vulnerability and the weight of his responsibilities, particularly concerning his pregnant wife, Emily. The perilous wildfires aren't just a backdrop; they become a character in themselves, a relentless force of nature that amplifies the tension and tests the characters' limits, adding an immersive quality that few thrillers achieve.

Rockets' Red Glare By William Webster & Dick Lochte

Rockets' Red Glare, the gripping debut thriller by William Webster and Dick Lochte, delivers a chilling and fast-paced narrative centered on a series of terrorist attacks in America’s national parks just before the Fourth of July weekend. The story opens with the brutal murder of two wilderness guides in Wyoming’s Wind River Mountains, launching a suspenseful investigation led by Tribal Police Deputy Sage Mendiluze. A former Marine sniper with a sharp sense of justice, Sage—alongside his loyal Australian shepherd, Peak—barely survives an IED explosion, signaling the presence of a calculated and dangerous enemy. As the holiday approaches, Sage is recruited by Special Agent Maggie Comstock to join a federal task force racing against time to stop the next attack.

Webster’s writing, enriched by his real-life experiences within the Washington D.C. beltway, brings raw authenticity and emotional depth to the story. The plot skillfully blends classic detective elements with modern geopolitical tension, introducing twin brothers turned terrorists after losing their parents in a drone strike. Their use of sniper rifles, drones, and even biological warfare adds a chilling realism to the narrative. The dynamic between Sage and Maggie adds a compelling layer of human connection and teamwork, while vivid descriptions of the rugged wilderness and the looming Independence Day deadline heighten the suspense and urgency.

With its explosive action, memorable characters, and thought-provoking themes, Rockets' Red Glare stands out as a must-read in the thriller genre. Webster and Lochte expertly weave high-stakes drama with a powerful sense of contemporary relevance, crafting a story that is both entertaining and unsettlingly plausible. The Impossible Thing By Belinda Bauer

You will be hard pressed to find a more uniquely enjoyable read than Belinda Bauer's The Impossible Thing. Readers seeking a thriller that ventures beyond the conventional will find themselves thoroughly engrossed in Bauer's exploration of a world few likely know exists: the intense and often secretively obsessive realm of bird egg collecting. The award-winning author demonstrates her storytelling prowess by crafting a narrative that is both historically fascinating and pulse-poundingly suspenseful.

Set against the backdrop of the United Kingdom, the novel delves into the peculiar obsession that drives oologists – individuals dedicated to collecting bird eggs. Bauer draws a compelling parallel between their fervent pursuit of rare shells and the pride other collectors find in acquiring coveted coins or stamps. This seemingly niche interest becomes the surprising anchor for a gripping thriller, as the narrative expertly flashes back and forth between the 1920s and the present day. This dual timeline allows Bauer to masterfully thread together the historical context of egg collecting with a contemporary mystery surrounding the collection and, more importantly, the audacious theft of exceptionally rare scarlet eggs. The way Bauer interweaves these timelines not only provides rich historical texture but also cleverly lays the groundwork for the present-day intrigue.

I highly recommend The Impossible Thing. Belinda Bauer has expertly woven together historical intrigue, suspenseful mystery, and moments of unexpected humor into a truly original and captivating novel. The book's unique premise, well-developed characters, and skillful narrative structure make it a standout in the thriller genre, leaving the reader thoroughly satisfied and perhaps with a newfound appreciation for the unusual passions that can drive human behavior. This is a book that will stay with you long after you turn the final page.

Dark Rising By Andrews & Wilson

Dark Rising, the fourth installment in Brian Andrews and Jeffery Wilson's Shepherds series, continues to deliver gripping action thrillers that are utterly addictive. I devoured this book in two days, sacrificing sleep to keep turning the pages. Andrews and Wilson have mastered the art of suspense, and the unique blend of military action with spiritual warfare sets this series apart.

Following the defeat of Victor in Dark Fall, former Navy SEAL Jedidiah Johnson and his team attempt a much-needed vacation. Jed's inherent unease with downtime, however, is palpable, and his divinely inspired trip to Haiti quickly ignites a chain reaction of events, plunging the Shepherds back into the fray to confront Victor's sinister successor. The authors craft characters with remarkable depth, such as Jed’s internal conflict between his warrior nature and his desire to follow his faith, and the action sequences, like the harrowing rescue mission through the Haitian mountains, are masterfully executed. The powerful message of good versus evil is interwoven throughout the story, shown through the characters unwavering dedication to their beliefs in the face of overwhelming odds.

Dark Rising is a superb thriller that will captivate you from beginning to end. If you crave a page-turning rollercoaster ride with a thought-provoking spiritual dimension, I highly recommend this book.

The Keeper By Charles Martin

Sometimes I read a book and wonder how the author has eluded me for so long. The Keeper, the fourth book in Charles Martin’s Murphy Shepherd series, is a political thriller that combines action with a profound sense of purpose, wrapped in compassion and love for one another. That may sound like a lot, but Martin has effortlessly crafted a book that stands out – because there is no other book quite like this one. It has been one of my favorite reads this year.

Murphy Shepherd, the protagonist, and his team have one of the most important jobs imaginable – finding kidnapped and trafficked people. This crucial mission underscores the author's emphasis on faith, family, country, and honor throughout the novel. Even more impressive is how Martin tells a compelling story without resorting to sensationalism. The narrative is rich with emotional depth, making the reader feel the weight of each rescue mission and the personal stakes involved.

When the three daughters of presidential hopeful Aaron Ashley are taken, Murphy and his team are called upon to bounce back from the loss of his mentor, find the girls, bring them home, and restore justice. Murphy finds solace with his family, friends, and his dog as he grieves the loss of his friend while simultaneously trying to figure out who would take Ashley’s daughters and who would benefit from their kidnapping. Thus, The Keeper begins its political thriller subplot, weaving a complex web of intrigue and suspense.

The Keeper is not only a superb thriller that tackles dark subjects like trafficking and kidnapping but also provides hope and light. Martin's writing shines a spotlight on the goodness that can emerge even in the darkest of times. The book is a testament to the power of community and the importance of standing up for what is right. Murphy’s interactions with his team and loved ones add layers of warmth and humanity to the narrative, making the reader root for their success. You won’t want to put this book down, and you’ll walk away feeling better about community and relationships. We need more Murphy Shepherds in this world. I highly recommend The Keeper by bestselling author Charles Martin.

White King By Juan Gómez-Jurado

White King is a superb, edge-of-your-seat forensic thriller and the third (and perhaps final) installment in Juan Gómez-Jurado’s internationally bestselling Antonia Scott Red Queen trilogy. Jurado’s storytelling is spellbinding, weaving fantastic characters—both protagonists and antagonists—into a riveting narrative that will leave you gasping at the unbelievable ending.

Antonia Scott, the protagonist and the crux of the top-secret Red Queen project that solves the most dangerous crimes in the EU, is back in action. This time, she must save her partner and protector, Inspector Jon Gutiérrez, from the devious ploys of her nemesis, Mr. White. To save Gutiérrez, she must solve cold cases while staying one step ahead of a madman whose final objective remains unclear. As Scott and Gutiérrez race around Madrid at top speed, their paths may lead them away from those they truly care about, while also steering them toward something so unexpected that even Scott’s gifted mind may struggle to stay ahead.

If you have time—and I highly recommend you make time—read Jurado’s trilogy: Red Queen, Black Wolf, and White King. If you’re a fan of thrillers like Greaney’s Gray Man and Hurwitz’s Orphan X, you won’t be able to get enough of this series. However, be prepared for a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of White King. Is Mr. White still a threat? Is the Red Queen program still needed? Is Jurado hinting at another Antonia Scott thriller to come?

This novel seamlessly weaves together multiple intertwined sub-plots, culminating in an astonishing ending that ties everything together, making for a truly sensational read.

In Leo, we follow the beloved veteran detectives Benny Griessel and Vaughn Cupido. Their dynamic dialogue and chemistry provide immense joy to the reader as we collectively attempt to unravel the mystery laid out by Meyer. The story kicks off with Griessel and Cupido investigating the seemingly unrelated deaths of a student and a businessman. However, as they delve deeper, they uncover layers of complexity, realizing that these deaths are part of a larger, more sinister plot.

Meyer's vivid portrayal of South Africa is one of the novel's standout features.
