Dark Intercept By Andrews & Wilson

dark-intercept-andrews-wilsonl-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

This Andrews and Wilson Shepherds series debut is the very definition of good versus evil. Navy SEAL Senior Chief Jedidiah Johnson, a man with an intentionally forgotten past is on the verge of retirement as a door kicking terrorist hunter when everything changes.

Retirement from twenty years of military service is something that everyone looks forward to who has spent time in the military. Not needing to jump into a career right away and finding your own niche with your free time was the plan until a young woman is kidnapped, and she is part of a family that he knows well. Being drawn back to the place where he grew up, with friends he hasn’t talked to in decades, family he hasn’t spoken to in a while, and at a place where his life was changed by a freak encounter with something that is not of this world, you can bet he isn’t excited about the trip.

This debut is dark and thorough, and as a faith-based thriller, it has the competitive juices to compete with A&W’s amazing Tier One series. The faith portion of this thriller is not an overpowering in your face religious service, it’s about how your faith can empower you and give you the strength to accomplish things that you might not have thought possible. The action is good, support characters are complex enough and intriguing enough to aid the story and create conflict as well. If you’re looking for something a little less hard hitting than the Tier One series but with the clever and dynamic writing from A&W give this one a try!

The Island By Ben Coes

Finally, Rob Tacoma and Dewey Andreas are back. It has been three years since we have had the pleasure of following Dewey on his kickass adventures. We left Dewey in 2018 in Bloody Sunday on a race against time and the North Korean regime and their nuclear ambitions. While Andreas has had some difficult times in his past, specifically losing his wife and son which seems like decades ago, then the loss of his fiancé some years later, he still operates with extreme dedication and fierceness. He has lived a life of service to the United States and absolutely has lost some of the most important things in his life while doing it. Maybe this is where things start to turn around for him.

An island is typically thought of with grand picturesque views, clear water, maybe even white sandy beaches, but The Island is far from that. Dewey has been sent to faraway lands, stolen nuclear weapons, even had a deadly virus inserted in him. Why would he continue to operate at the tempo that he has? The battle rages furiously while Dewey and a couple other tier one operators are pushed to their brink trying to prevent the assassination of the most important figurehead in America and preventing the greatest financial collapse of all time. Meeting a pretty lady is always a nice break from the killing and mayhem that follows this cool operator. Dewey gets the opportunity to meet this cool former MI6 intelligence agent who might be the greatest distraction he could as for, but with knowing his past he has difficult decisions to make.

Coes delivers an unbelievably dark and bloody game of survival for one of the best characters in the thriller world. The ability to showcase an authentic Dewey battling violent extremists in an all-out war zone in downtown America shows the versatility in Andreas’s talents and skills. The Island is very cinematic from page one and is a brutal roller coaster ride that deserves a shot at the big screen.

Assassin's Dawn By Ward Larsen

assassins-dawn-ward-larsen-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

One of the most dangerous tools that the Israeli government can use is back at it again in this quick-paced hard-hitting novella. David Slaton is a certified badass from the grips and imagination of Ward Larsen and this hits the bullseye without any question.

Slaton is on a standard clandestine mission, one that you could see the Mossad trying to pull off because they are one of the world's most sly agencies. Things immediately go sideways after a botched prostitution adventure for enemy player number one. Long lost enemy number two turns up near the location of enemy number one. Looks like a clean-cut case of get the bad guy, but it could not be further from the truth. The intrigue heats up, action comes to a crescendo, and Slaton is left doing what he does best, dealing death.

Larsen is a tremendous author and after having a minute to soak up this incredible read, I have decided that he is very underappreciated and underrated. I could not put this book down and it was done in two hours. That is it. There is no argument needed. He has delivered a classic good versus evil afternoon read that will leave you ready for more David Slaton.

Black Ice By Brad Thor

black-ice-brad-thro-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

If you’re a trained killer, with the background of Scot Harvath, you’re always going to finish a mission, no matter the cost. Even if it requires an Arctic collaborative mission that leaves you on your own in a foreign land without your typical support?

Scot Harvath has rarely faltered in hunting down some of the world’s most lethal monsters, but his “summer of fun” in Norway goes sideways when the man he killed years before shows his face. Harvath was trying to get away on a summer sabbatical with his Norwegian lady friend Solvi when life goes from zero to sixty quickly. Solvi and Harvath are thrown into a critical high-stakes adventure to stop some of the world's most sensitive electronic hardware from being used against the United States. Thor creates a modern-day thriller that rivals the American hunt for the Enigma machine during World War II.

Black Ice hits hard right from the start and the intrigue constantly builds, with a life or death case that puts a whole country in jeopardy. Thor shows Harvath’s multifaceted talents and skills, as his character grows professionally and personally. Black Ice offers cutting-edge action and an innovative storyline that competes with current headlines.

Razorblade Tears By S.A. Cosby

razorblade-tears-sa-cosby-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

After the amazing debut that Cosby dropped in 2020 in Blacktop Wasteland, I was curious as to how this was going to stack up against it. I should have never questioned Cosby’s ability to create a story worthy of the New York Times Bestsellers list as this is an amazing sophomore release.

Ike Randolph and Buddy Lee Jenkins could not have been any more different. One is a former convicted felon turned lawn maintenance company owner and the other is a run down on his luck hillbilly criminal with an alcohol problem. They are forced to earn each other’s friendship on the path to finding the truth to what happened to their sons. There is no amount of pain and heartache these two are willing to endure to find those responsible and I absolutely loved it!

Cosby delivers another truly authentic and violent story about life that will leave you crying, and wishing you were fighting with Ike and Buddy Lee. The language is harsh, just like life has treated the men in this adventure. The violence is unbelievable and justified, sparing no one from the wrath of two fathers hell bent on justice. The story follows a trend that is common in America in contemporary times, one that needs to be challenged and righted, as the people that are being attacked, verbally and physically daily because of differences. Cosby brings a lot of emotion, offensive and defensive, enabling every reader to feel the mayhem, the hate, and most importantly the love that every man should have for one another.

Falling By T.J. Newman

t-j-newman-falling-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

As a pilot would you crash your plane to save your family, or let them perish while you attempt to save the people on your flight? Think you could make that decision?

In her buzz-worthy debut novel, T.J. Newman crafts a breakneck speed, hair raising, roller coaster ride of a story.

Newman provides clever character introductions, while developing a high-stakes narrative with timely placed flashbacks. It’s obvious Newman’s 10 years in the airline industry provided plenty of time to think of ways flights could go sideways. That time was well spent as Falling is terrifying.

With a plausible and believable story of a plane flight from hell, Newman’s debut novel has the potential to be on the NYT bestseller list. Preorder this book now, as it will wow and stun you with its detailed and ruthless storytelling!

Sleeping Bear By Connor Sullivan

connot-sullivan-sleeping-bear-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

How would you react if your daughter were to go missing? How would you react knowing that there is a trend of people that have gone missing from the area she would have been visiting? This story followed the path of a tragedy struck family, the Gale’s, who have been dealt blows left and right for years. They are a strong willed, dedicated group from Montana that have been taught how to take care of themselves.

This debut from Sullivan is an absolute pace-setting jaw-dropper from beginning to end. Sullivan hooks you right from the beginning, getting you emotionally attached and invested into Cassie Gale’s character. From there on you are in for a story of retribution and dedication from an All-American family. There is a mysterious aura that follows the Gale’s, like they almost are not who they seem to be. It could not be further from the truth, as you walk side-by-side with Cassie as she tries to find a little bit of reality in the life that she has been dealt. Sullivan uses a very carefully crafted story that is extremely engaging and heart pounding. I found myself reading way too fast more than a few times, just to see what happens next. It wasn’t that I wasn’t immersed, I felt like I was watching a movie, I felt the scenes, the locations that I have never actually been to, and the fear, excitement, and unknown was just dripping from the pages. Sullivan provides a fresh face to the thriller genre with this adrenaline fueled debut that I have no doubt every thriller fan will love.

Shadow Masters By J.T. Patten

j-t-patten-shadow-masters-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

“People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” George Orwell supposedly said that. Doesn’t that make you feel safe? What about those rough men? Who is protecting their families and what happens when people do harm to those at home?

In Shadow Masters: Reloaded, J.T. Patten introduces you to Sean Havens, one of those shadow players who works for the government, or so he thinks. Life changes for him quickly as his family is turned upside down while he is away on “business.” Havens returns home immediately upon finding out that his family has been attacked, while he is worlds away creating chaos. Patten has Havens battling relentlessly to find the truth that is buried in the darkness that continues to follow him.

Death is delivered frequently and brutally in this dark and violent story. Shadow Masters: Reloaded is filled with impressive characters, breathtaking action, and heaps of twists and turns to keep you glued until the end. Patten leaves nothing to the imagination as his writing continues to grow in this fast-paced thriller.

Shadow Target By David Ricciardi

shadow-target-david-ricciardi-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

In the fourth Jake Keller installment from David Ricciardi, we are given another great story that will leave you wondering what he will come up with next. Keller has been through a lot following a complete life altering mission, a rogue drone, and pirates, but what we get this time is Keller in the fight of his life.

America, France, and London are just a few of the locations that Keller is taken during this hair raising kill or be killed adventure. Ricciardi sets up this one with great pace, a little self-reflection, and a whole lot of built up frustration from a love once burning hot gone cold. This is a very fun and intriguing read. I have found Ricciardi’s work to always be engaging and detailed, while letting your mind travel a bit before bringing you to the twist.

Sons Of Valor By Andrews & Wilson

sons-valor-andrews-wilson-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

Andrews and Wilson have been delivering amazing Tier One work for the last few years, It revolves around the creation of Jack Kemper turned John Dempsey after the tragic destruction of the Tier One SEAL community. You see amazing interaction with a number of characters that could have plenty of stories written on each. LCDR Keith 'Chunk' Redman has been one of those characters that have supported Team EMBER and Dempsey throughout the series, but now it's his turn to shine.

Chunk finds himself in the spotlight in this new off shoot of the Tier One universe. A highly trained special operations warrior destined for greatness, LCDR 'Chunk' Redman is likeable, a leader and lethal. This story leads us on a trip with a scenario that's extremely believable, high speed, and full of action.

There also happen to be a strong female character that is introduced to the crew the Chunk leads who goes by the nickname 'Heels' and she is a force to be reckoned with. She's determined, unorthodox at times, and the kind of character that we've come to expect from two of the best authors in the thriller genre. One that stakes claim to the pages that she's on and drives the story. I was extremely pleased with this one and was relieved to find that the Tier One universe is in great hands as Andrews and Wilson are constantly upping their game!

Chasing The Lion By A.J. Tata

A-j-tata-chasing-liion-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

General (Ret.) A.J. Tata has been on the writing scene for quite some time with his Jake Mahegan series and cowriting the Vick Harwood series with Nicholas Irving. Both of those series have been a blast to read and now we get a chance to enjoy a new character from Tata.

From the onset of Chasing the Lion, it is evident that there is evil at play as the team discovers an atrocity of what seems like biblical proportions. Colonel Garett Sinclair, a journeyed military man, is back in the field following the passing of his wife. They stumble upon what seems to be an extremely unfortunate and heartbreaking situation where Sinclair knows one of the affected people. Tragic and gruesome discoveries along with shadow figures, political figureheads, viruses and bacteria, and more help create a great read.

Tata crafts scenes that enable readers to visualize what he is building in his mind. No doubt, he has experienced aspects of this book in real life: combat, foreign lands, and camaraderie amongst teammates, which elevates the story’s authenticity and makes it feel personal. Extremely interesting plotline, along with great character development makes this a tremendous start for the Colonel Sinclair series!

Bone Rattle By Marc Cameron

bone-rattle-marc-cameron-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

US Marshal Arliss Cutter is back in another great read by New York Times Bestselling author Marc Cameron. I always find myself not only enjoying Cutter but learning a little bit about the Alaskan frontier and people that Cameron details.

This Cutter adventure starts with the typical non-Clancy Cameron vibe and the bad folks are back in full force. Cameron does an amazing job describing and building the literary tension between local police, Alaskan State Troopers and the US Marshals as they work there way through the violence and death that surround the hunt for Alaskan gold.

The amount of history and factual evidence detailed by Cameron really bring the story to life. The relationship dynamics that are displayed between Cutter and Mim, his brothers widow, continue to build and create awkward but meaningful growth between the two. As Cutter teams with partner Lola Teariki to monitor a high profile court case, one of the US Attorneys is brutally murdered and Cutter is turned into the man hunter that defines his character.

Cameron shines again as the mystery of Arliss Cutter grows with this suspenseful read! His dedicated time in law enforcement as a United States Marshal solidify the narrative and will leave the intrigue dripping. The details are thorough, the locations authentic, and the adversary is unique. This is a great addition to the Cutter series and won’t disappoint.

The Devil's Hand By Jack Carr

devils-hand-chris-miller-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

Jack Carr continues to find the groove in his latest James Reece thriller. His writing has been nothing but phenomenal from the beginning with The Terminal List, followed on by True Believer and Savage SonThe Devil’s Hand is another stellar piece of work that shows how much time, effort, and research that Carr is putting into making everything perfect. I’ve always been amazed at how thorough some authors are when getting the details correct and this one is a spot-on example.

Reece is a cultural phenomenon, he’s fought against the establishment, stuck it to the man, and he’s lived to tell about it. He’s righted wrongs and made revenge a normalcy in his routine. Now he’s back on the path to make those pay for one of the worlds greatest tragedies ever committed. The dedication to protecting Americans is at the forefront of this entire ride and Carr shines through James Reece easily.

The details are impeccable and if you have followed Carr’s newsletter you would have most likely caught the one time he put in a great amount of research just to get a paragraph or two together about an AK-47.

Let’s just say this, Carr writes a violent and meticulous story that will leave you fascinated. Resiliency and retribution help shape the path after the President of the United States has a mission for Reece. There is plenty of shadow work in progress, bad actors, and a ton of grade A writing you won’t be disappointed in.

Deep Strike By Rick Campbell

deepstrike-rick-campbell-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

As a former Nuclear trained Submarine Officer, Rick Campbell knows submarines. I was a submariner and his descriptions of operations, lingo, and lifestyle aboard a submarine are spot on.

Campbell does a phenomenal job at creating realistic scenes with the world's end hanging in the balance. A father with the love of his child so deep that he wagers the fate of the world on getting his daughter the medical treatment that she needs. Captain Murray Wilson returns to ensure that the needs of the free world are met to pilot the USS North Carolina and stand vigilant while a mad man runs wild with weapons meant on turning the world into a wasteland.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Campbell and he is not only a great author but a great person. His service to this country makes his writing authentic and void of nonsense. If you are into submarines, submarine warfare, and all-American characters protecting the good ‘ole USA, this is one that will grab your attention and keep you entertained.

2034 By Ackerman & Stavridis

2034-best-thriller-elliot-ackermanbooks-chris-miller.jpg

2034 is subtitled as ‘A Novel of the Next World War’ and it is every bit of the truth. The smoke and mirrors, incredible action scenes, and powerful characters make this an extraordinary futuristic war thriller.

The story starts off with a mysterious situation in the South China Sea resulting in one of the most tragic situations that the United States has had to deal with. Loss of communications with the Commander in Chief coupled with timely Chinese officials visiting the White House, this story gets crazy (in a good way) right away. Ackerman and Stavridis, both veterans, use their time in uniform to help bring a truly authentic feel to the lives that the sailors and airmen were living while dealing with the onslaught of the Chinese.

The futuristic war that 2034 portrays is phenomenal. I found myself attached to the fact that one of the National Security Advisors to the president, Sandeep Chowdhurry, an Indian immigrant to the United States, is the epitome of the American dream. The book shows a delicate balance of the rights that America fights for, while showing those who have been a part of that transition before are playing a major part in the global catastrophe that is occurring. Major Chris “Wedge” Mitchell (Pilot) and Captain Sarah Hunt (Commodore, Destroyer Squadron 21) are two of the main characters that Ackerman and Stavridis put time and effort into as they are a pleasure to follow along with on their hunt to right the wrongs that the war of 2034 includes.

The Outside Man By Don Bentley

outside-man-don-bentley-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

Bentley does a fascinating job following up his debut Without Sanction showing how versatile main character Matt Drake is. He’s been beat up, on the run, and now he’s just trying to take a break. That all changes on a nice brisk February day in Austin, Texas while he is minding his own business. Driving around Austin in beautiful weather things go sideways real quick, almost landing Drake in a ton of trouble with local law enforcement after the shooting of a police officer. Drake’s wife Laila is aware of his job, so much so that it is an easy over dinner casual conversation. You get to see a real-life how a spouse cares for someone but knows there is something going on inside the head of her husband. The interaction shows us that Drake is missing something, maybe his career, maybe the thrill, but he’s immediately tasked following the come to Jesus meeting with his wife.

Drake is soon on the hunt, trying to find any lead to understand why he was targeted and by whom which leads him all over the world. High rollers, gun battles, bad guys galore, and one small problem, one of extreme importance happens to find it’s way right into Drake's wheelhouse, one he never thought he’d have to fight for. Bentley keeps the pace up, facts straight, and undeniably has you cheering for Matt Drake to wreck shop. I enjoyed Without Sanction; this one shows Bentley is capable of bringing top tier thriller material to life again. He drops one of the largest twists that I actually cringed at, it was a roller coaster ride the whole time while rooting for Matt Drake.

Firewall By Andrew Watts

firewall-andrew-watts-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

A really fun and entertaining read. Watts does a really good job of creating the spy vibes right from the beginning as Colt McShane, a former Naval surface officer, who has a by chance run in with an Israeli beauty not once but twice. Then his world changes. Spies, moles, and Artificial Intelligence will satisfy your thirst as a thriller fan!

The story is a seamless timeline with minimal jumping around from past to present if that is something that you aren’t a fan of. The characters are given plenty of time for you to start to get to know them and be able to make some connections with them. This isn’t the kind novel that gets you emotionally connected to a favorite character, this is more of a subdued not as over-the-top that Bond can be, but with a flair of Bourne with the misdirection that we’re accustomed to. McShane is a very likable character whom you want to gain a bond with but the ending left the door open for us to get to know him more in the future. Watts artistic ability has this performing as a very intriguing and believable storyline. The ending unfolded just as you would expect, pure chaos. I loved it. Watts creates a constantly evolving AI nightmare while multiple nations are trying to steal his creation from right under his nose.

Relentless By Mark Greaney

relentless- mark greaney-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

Greaney shines bright in the latest Gray Man thriller as Court Gentry, a world class assassin, is caught up in cloak and dagger operations while being a liability and an asset. He has been disavowed, hunted, and forgiven but he is being tracked by multiple threats and he must prove his worth yet again.

Poison Apple is an off the books, blacker than black, hidden from almost everyone group, but when a former government employee unleashes a monitoring application that links all United States intelligence employees into a facial recognition database that gives real time location updates, no one can hide. Gentry is thrust into action by his handler, even after the ending of One Minute Out has him a little worse for wear. Not operating at 100% and in the thick of it again, Gentry is a hero of a lot of things, but luck sides with him a few times. A small battle in South America followed by a jaunt across the pond to assist in the monitoring of some less than stellar company is just the beginning of this classic Greaney Gray Man thriller. In the way this story saddles up, Gentry’s team is challenged time and time again, battling through city streets of Germany, while those who seem to be allies aren’t always who they say they are. The super spy vibe with a side of Gray Man ruthlessness makes Relentless a top read of 2021 and a definite must read.

The Treadstone Exile By Joshua Hood

joshua-hood-treadstone-exile-best-thriller-books-chris-miller.jpg

Adam Hayes is tired of killing people, even going to extremes like keeping track of how many days it has been. Like some safety board at a company saying this many days since a workplace injury, except in Hayes' case, it’s death. Joshua Hood brings Adam Hayes from the whirlwind that was The Treadstone Resurrection and continues the unapologetic face bashing that is his life.

The story line here follows Hayes' life as he tries to forget about the killing that he has done while being away from his family in a foreign country. As a contract pilot, Hayes uses his talents to help those in need, until it goes sideways, again. I am not one to drop too many hints or spoilers for an upcoming thriller so you won’t get one from me here. What I can tell you is that Hood continues to bring in-your-face action, non-stop drama, and twists that leave you asking why? The Treadstone project has always been a dark group, one you have probably enjoyed in the comfort of your own home in the form of a Bourne film. The humanity that is evidently missing from many of the characters in this adventure are still found in Hayes, making him a more than likeable character.

After wading through the blood and brass that Hood leaves behind, Adam Hayes is left showing why Treadstone fears him!
